After years of hearing her voice on bonus tracks of soundtracks, other artist albums, and even leaks on the internet; the public finally receives the highly anticipated mixtape from Jhene Aiko.
Representing LA, Aiko brings smooth vocals with great pen game and great production by LA producers Fisticuffs (jazmine SuLlivan, miguel, neyo) to create a masterpiece called Sailing Soul(s). Based on the lyrics throughout the tracks, the music is about just being yourself and not allowing the outside world dictate how you love, live, or create. You create your own destiny. As stated on her blog:
"i stepped back into the field and took a meeting with a label head . in this meeting, i was innocently told, to “sell” myself “when walking into these meetings.The mixape features some music favorites such as 50 Cent, Drake, Gucci Mane, Kanye West and Miguel. It also features some underground heavy-hitters such as HOPE, Lite, Kendrick Lamar and Roosevelt.
that’s when i decided i would sail my “self” rather than sell my “self”. the message is a simple one: sail you’re soul….don’t sell you’re soul…..its the only thing we can take with us , where ever it is we go…"
As hard as it is to pick, my track favorites are Real Now, Stranger, and My Mine because those songs STAY on repeat.
I give this mixtape 5 out 5 strawberries for not being a mixtape but an ALBUM! This is a great listen and can be played from beginning to end repeatly without skipping a single track. It's universal and both males and females can rock to it. The fact that it's free is a double bonus cause this is worth being on the racks at the store for purchase. This is definitely music the game is missing and some the people need. REAL MUSIC!
